Thyroid Disorders Q & A

What are thyroid disorders?

Your thyroid is a small gland that sits at the base of your neck and is responsible for producing hormones that regulate your body’s functions, including your metabolism. When there’s any dysfunction in the gland, you may receive a thyroid disorder diagnosis.

Some of the most common thyroid disorders Dr. Natelli diagnoses and treats include:

Hyperthyroidism is a condition where the thyroid overproduces hormones, causing a variety of symptoms. Graves’ disease is a common type of hyperthyroidism that results in symptoms like:

  • Nervousness
  • Racing heart
  • Mood swings
  • Muscle weakness
  • Brittle nails and hair

You may also lose weight unexpectedly and experience poor quality of sleep. In Graves’ disease, you may also experience a noticeable bulging of the eyes, a hallmark symptom of the condition.

In hypothyroidism, your thyroid gland doesn’t make enough hormones to sustain normal function in your body. A common type of hypothyroidism is Hashimoto’s disease, which causes symptoms like:

  • Dry skin
  • Constipation
  • Chronic fatigue
  • Slow heart rate

As a result of an underactive thyroid, you may also experience memory problems and develop an extreme sensitivity to cold temperatures. For some, the condition leads to enlargement of the thyroid gland, known as a goiter.

How is a thyroid disorder diagnosed?

If you have symptoms of a thyroid disorder, Dr. Natelli reviews your personal and family medical history and performs a physical exam. He also orders blood work that allows him to evaluate the levels of thyroid hormones in your blood.

Based on the results of your blood test, Dr. Natelli can determine if your symptoms relate to a thyroid disorder or another underlying health issue. If he finds you have a thyroid condition, like Hashimoto’s disease, Dr. Natelli creates a treatment plan to ease your symptoms and rebalance your hormone levels.

How are thyroid disorders treated?

While there isn’t a cure for thyroid disorders, both hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism are treatable with medication therapy. The goal of Dr. Natelli’s treatment plan is to restore normal thyroid hormone levels in your blood and ease the severity of your symptoms.

For hypothyroidism, Dr. Natelli can prescribe levothyroxine, a synthetic hormone that restores hormone balance in the body.

If you need treatment for hyperthyroidism, you may need medications to slow down the hormone production in your thyroid. When medication isn’t enough to control your condition, you may need to have surgery to remove your thyroid gland. Following surgery, you can expect to need daily hormone therapy to maintain balanced hormone levels.
